Self-Care and Wellness for Underestimated Communities: Overcoming Challenges and Prioritizing Self-Care

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to participate in an event where I asked a typical engagement question to spark conversation. The question centered around self-care and I was surprised to find that many people asked me, "What do you mean by self-care?" This moment served as a reminder and learning experience that despite the widespread use of the term "self-care," the concept isn't as well understood by everyone as we might think. That's why I was inspired to write this blog post and keep the conversation about self-care going.

Self-Care and Underestimated Communities

Of course, self-care and wellness are important for everyone, but they can often be overlooked or considered a luxury for people living in underestimated communities who are facing a multitude of challenges. These challenges can include poverty, discrimination, lack of access to healthcare and other resources, and the daily stress of navigating a world that is not always welcoming or understanding. Despite these obstacles, it is essential that members of underestimated communities prioritize their self-care and wellness practices.

What is Self-Care and Why is Important:

Self-care refers to intentional and proactive steps individuals can take to improve their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Self-care is essential for our overall health and well-being. It helps us manage stress, improve our mood, increase our energy levels, and foster a positive self-image. Without regular self-care, it can be difficult to maintain a healthy work-life balance and manage the demands of daily life.

Challenges to Incorporating Self-Care and Wellness:

For many people living in underestimated communities, there are a variety of barriers that make it difficult to incorporate self-care and wellness practices into their daily lives. These can include limited access to resources, financial constraints, and the demands of daily life. Additionally, the daily stress and trauma of living in an underestimated community can make it difficult for individuals to prioritize their own self-care.

Overcoming Barriers:

Despite these challenges, there are a number of ways for individuals in underestimated communities to incorporate self-care and wellness practices into their daily lives. These include:

  • Utilizing the local library, smartphones to access wellness resources to learn about self-care and wellness practices can help individuals prioritize and incorporate them into their daily lives.

  • Making peace with caring for themselves, through unlearning, releasing, relearning, myths about self-care and toxic generational habits and mindsets.

  • Creating their own definition of self-care and identifying their unique self-care practices.

  • Finding low-cost or free self-care resources, such as journaling or community yoga classes or meditation groups.

  • Identifying the people within their support systems.

  • Reaching out to supportive friends, family members, or community organizations for help and support.

  • Practicing self-care through small, daily actions such as taking breaks throughout the day or journaling before bed.

Conclusion:

Self-care and wellness are essential for individuals living in underestimated communities, but they can be difficult to prioritize amidst the many challenges these communities face. However, by overcoming barriers and making self-care a priority, individuals in underestimated communities can improve their overall well-being and manage the stress and trauma they may experience. It is important to remember that self-care is not a luxury, it is a necessity and it is our right to take care of ourselves.
