Finding Joy in Movement: A Recap of Our Hula Hooping Session

As part of our Soulful Summer Series celebrating Minority Mental Health Month, we hosted a joyful and energizing hula hooping session. This event was designed to bring a sense of playfulness and joy to our community, reminding us of the importance of movement and mindfulness in our mental health journeys.

A Joyful Experience

The session began with grounding exercises, allowing us to feel into our senses and connect with the present moment. We shared what brought us to this session, creating a sense of community and understanding. After a gentle stretch routine, we dove into the fun of hula hooping, learning new tricks, and playing with the hoops brought out the childlike joy in all of us. We then took time to journal our thoughts and ended with a collective reflection, sharing our experiences and feelings.

Reflecting on this experience, it was incredibly freeing to let go of stressors and worries, to be present, and to center joy. It was a reminder of how essential it is to take time for ourselves, to play, and to simply enjoy the moment.

The Importance of Joy

Joy is not just a nice-to-have; it’s essential for our well-being. For minority populations, who often face unique challenges and stressors, creating spaces for joy is even more crucial. Joy allows us to recharge, to find hope, and to connect with each other in meaningful ways.

Why Hula Hooping?

In the fast-paced world we live in, with so much happening around us, we often forget to create spaces that center our joy. When was the last time you hula hooped? For many, it’s been years. We chose this activity because we believe in the power of joy and fun. We deserve joy, and it’s important to emphasize that loudly and clearly.

Movement and Mental Health

This event was different from our usual panel discussions. We wanted to do something outside the box, something that centers joy and promotes fitness. Movement is a powerful tool for supporting our mental health. It helps reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall well-being.

Personally, since a recent car accident, I’ve struggled with motivation to workout. Being in community with others during this hula hooping session served as a source of motivation and accountability. It reminded me that movement, especially in a joyful and supportive environment, can be healing and energizing.

Conclusion

Our hula-hooping session was a beautiful reminder of the importance of joy and movement in our lives. It was an opportunity to let go, to play, and to be present. As we continue our Soulful Summer Series, we remain committed to creating spaces that celebrate and center our well-being, in all its forms.

Join us on this journey of joy and wellness. Let’s continue to find ways to bring more play, movement, and happiness into our lives. Together, we can support each other in our mental health journeys and celebrate the joy that we all deserve.
