3 Wellness-focused Tips for a Great Start to the New Year!

As we bid farewell to 2022 and welcome in the new year, many of us are looking for ways to start off 2023 on the right foot. One of the best ways to do this is to focus on wellness—making intentional decisions that help you lead a healthier and happier life. This blog post will provide some wellness-focused tips to help you make the most of the new year!

  1. Attitude of Gratitude

On New Year’s day I started the year with a 6-mile hike with 25 other liked-minded BIPOC individuals. At the beginning of the hike the facilitator said, “Everyday above ground is something to be grateful for.”

As I think about what she said, it brings me to the point of cultivating an attitude of gratitude.

So often we rush into the New Year ready to put the deal to the metal with our goals and resolution,

A great starting point is to make an effort to adopt an attitude of gratitude for everything you still have and for the experiences that made you grow. Taking a few moments each day to appreciate the people and things in your life can help you stay grounded during these times.

Action step: We recommend that you start your day by writing down five things you are grateful for. This can be done by keeping a gratitude journal or just by pausing before bed or in the morning to think about the blessings in your life. It can also be helpful to look at moments of growth and the hardships you’ve overcome. Thinking of these will bring feelings of contentment and joy into your life that will help motivate you as you start a new year.

  2. Take a Breath

It is easy to become overwhelmed by the idea of “starting fresh” when a new year comes around. After all, you are supposed to change everything and make all these big resolutions to be better, right? At Well Together, we believe that it is much more effective to begin the new year with a mindful attitude and focus on our personal wellness. We suggest that we start by just taking a breath.

Breathing is a powerful tool for both our minds and bodies. It can help us reduce stress, relax and promote feelings of peace and calm. When we are feeling overwhelmed or frazzled, taking a few mindful breaths can be a great way to ground ourselves and restore balance.

Action Step: When taking a mindful breath, take a few moments to focus your attention on your inhalations and exhalations. Notice how the air moves through your body as you breathe in and out. If you find that your mind wanders, gently return your focus to the breath. Taking a few of these intentional breaths at the start of your day can set the tone for a relaxed, yet productive day.

  1. Act with Intention

It’s not enough to just start doing things, it’s important that you do so with intention. As you plan for the new year, think about your goals and how they are helping you become a better version of yourself.

When crafting your plan of action, consider building in some accountability. It could be a friend who checks in on your progress, or an online group or community that helps keep you motivated.

Once you have a plan of action, don’t hesitate to take the first step! Taking action will help you stay focused and give you momentum. Well Together has a webinar soon approaching, if you need help getting started.

Action Plan: Take time each day to assess how far you’ve come, what you’ve accomplished, and where you are headed. Check in with yourself and be sure to celebrate the small wins along the way. With the right attitude, intention and action, this new year can be one of your best yet!

We hope that the tips we've outlined will help you start the new year off in a positive, meaningful way.
