DIsconnect to Reconnect!
When was the last time you gave yourself permission to unplug ? Over the last week and a half I took some time to unplug from social media. Unplugging isn’t new to me, as it was a regular practice for me while in graduate school when it came time for major tests, projects, and papers. Given my semester bill, I definitely had the willpower to focus and give my undivided attention to the necessary tasks at hand.
A few years later, disconnecting is a little bit more difficult, especially, since I’m now wearing my entrepreneur hat. I think that we can all agree that social media is not what it used to be, where one would freely upload a silly photo of themselves, a family vacation photo, a photo from a fun night out with friends, or even photos of your snazzy outfit or delicious food. Nowadays, it’s all about business: keeping up with the algorithms, non-stop inspirational post, constant selling, captions longer than a book, and the list goes on.
Given this new social media landscape, as an entrepreneur, organization, or just someone trying to keep up with the times, it can feel like you have to always show up or you’ll be left behind. However, that is not true, so let’s release that. Of course, releasing this is not an easy task, therefore, it takes lots of self-awareness, willpower, and sometimes some accountability.
Accountability was definitely a factor in my short unplugging hiatus! My decision to unplug came immediately after a meaningful conversation with one of my coaches that further opened my eyes to the pressures to produce and impacts of constantly being plugged in all the time. That conversation stuck with me and was exactly the message that I needed in that moment, which, I fully accepted.
During the time of my short hiatus, I have been able to connect with myself in a different way. More specifically, I had the opportunity to be present, make more time for meditation, have more mindful interactions with family and friends, be more productive, gain more clarity, experience more silence to hear to my needs, and welcome lots of new creative ideas.
All in all, my mini social media hiatus was good to me and created space for self-awareness and self-reflection for how I want to authentically show up in this world daily (both in-person and virtually), giving myself permission to step back from the demands of the hustle, and welcome an opportunity to reconnect with myself.
